John Clifford Gritts (1947-2025).
Cherokee 411 honors the life and legacy of John Gritts, a proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, whose life’s work touched generations of Indigenous students, educators, and artists across Indian Country.
Born with a gift for creativity and a heart for service, John pursued his passion for art at Bacone College and later at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), where he studied under renowned artist Fritz Scholder. His early artistic journey reflected both a deep reverence for Native traditions and an unflinching embrace of modern expression. A balance that would come to define his life’s work.
Throughout his distinguished career, John devoted himself to education and advocacy for Indigenous students, ensuring that Native youth had access to the opportunities, mentorship, and encouragement they deserved. His leadership and compassion left a lasting mark in classrooms, colleges, and communities nationwide.
In recognition of his lifelong service, John received the American Indian College Fund’s first Lifetime Achievement Award, an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Bacone College, and was named Indian Elder of the Year by the National Indian Education Association, honors that only begin to express the depth of his influence.
Beyond the accolades, John will be remembered for his humility, humor, and unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives. His spirit continues to guide those who teach, create, and uplift the next generation of Indigenous leaders.
ᏩᏙ Wado, John, for dedicating your life to opening doors for others. Your legacy lives on in every student you inspired and every path you helped light.
