The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office confirms deputies have arrested a woman accused of shooting and killing her husband Thursday night.

According to the sheriff, Elizabeth Poteete, 70, is accused of shooting Troy Wayne Poteete. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now handling the investigation.
Troy Poteete was a longtime public servant whose life of service left a lasting impact on Cherokee governance and cultural preservation. He served the Cherokee people in multiple leadership roles, including as a Tribal Council member during a period of significant growth and later as a Justice of the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court. Beyond his official duties, he was widely known as a historian, preservationist, and advocate for Cherokee history
