OKLAHOMA CITY — Cherokee Nation citizen Kendra Bennett opened Oklahoma's annual Veterans Awareness Day on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, with a performance of the National Anthem during the joint legislative session at the State Capitol, an event recognizing the contributions of Oklahoma's veterans and the legislators who advocate for them. Video of Bennett's performance is provided courtesy of her social media account.

Bennett, a 2022 graduate of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma's (AICCO) Leadership Native Oklahoma program and a current AICCO board member for the 2026–2028 term, reflected on the experience in a public statement.

"Honored simply doesn't say enough," Bennett wrote. "Today I had the honor and pleasure to sing the National Anthem at our State Capitol as we honored our Veterans and those who continue the fight for our Veterans. A very special thank you to the Veterans Council for having me out."

The joint session, hosted by the Oklahoma Veterans Council, recognized Rep. Annie Menz (D-Norman) — a third-generation veteran and military family member — as the 2026 Representative of the Year.

During her time at the Capitol, Bennett also paused to take a photo with Rep. Amanda Clinton (D-Tulsa), a fellow Cherokee Nation citizen representing House District 71, and Rep. Emily Gise (R-Oklahoma City), who represents House District 90.

"It's always great to visit with our Legislators," Bennett said. "However, it's an even better visit when you get to see incredible women power houses, Amanda Clinton and Emily Gise. Loved seeing you both today."
