Cherokee Nation Citizens Begin 2025 Deer Season With Tribal Hunting Rights

By Staff, Cherokee 411

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Deer season opens Saturday across Oklahoma, and Cherokee Nation citizens are reminded they can hunt and fish within five tribal reservations using their tribal citizenship ID card as a valid license.

The Cherokee Nation announced that its citizens may exercise these rights within the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole and Muscogee Nation reservations.

Under Cherokee Nation law, tribal citizens are not required to purchase deer or turkey tags. However, hunters must follow bag limits and season dates, and all harvests must be checked in through the Gadugi Portal. The Nation emphasized that every harvest must be reported under the account of the hunter, including minors.

Complete information on season dates, bag limits and regulations is available through the Cherokee Nation Wildlife Conservation Office at wildlife.cherokee.org. Citizens can also contact the office at wildlife@cherokee.org.

Tribal officials urged hunters to stay safe and follow conservation guidelines as the 2025 season begins.
