WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has named Eric Mahroum as director of its Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs, the agency announced.

Mahroum most recently served as director of the Department of Energy’s Office of State and Community Energy Programs, a role he assumed in January 2025, according to a DOE press release. In that position, he oversaw programs that made hundreds of millions of dollars available to Indian tribes and Alaska Native corporations.
Mahroum first joined the Department of Energy in 2017 during the Trump administration, serving in roles that included assistant to the secretary and special adviser in the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. From 2018 to 2019, he served as senior adviser on minority business and later as a director for the Department of Energy under the White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative.
He also previously worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as an adviser to the regional administrator in Fort Worth, Texas, before returning to the private sector to lead Mahroum Communications LLC.
In a statement, Mahroum said his experience overseeing large-scale energy programs benefiting tribes and Alaska Native corporations, along with his background in the energy industry, prepared him to help tribes expand energy development in alignment with the administration’s priorities.
Mahroum has served on advisory boards including the American Lebanese Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Advisory Committee for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. In 2022, he was appointed to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission by Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Wayne Christian.
The Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs works with federally recognized tribes and Alaska Native entities to advance energy development, capacity building, and energy sovereignty.
